Commercial Information Circular No. 3/00

European Union (EU) : Renewal of the China/EU Bilateral Agreement
on MFA and Non-MFA Textile Product

The Department has received information that China and the EU have agreed to extend the existing textiles agreements on MFA and non-MFA products for another year until 31 December 2000.

 

New Quantitative Limits

 

  1. Quantitative limits are currently established on 40 categories of textile and clothing products of cotton, wool or fine animal hair and man made fibre covered by the MFA bilateral agreement and 28 categories of textile products made of silk, linen and ramie etc. not covered by the MFA bilateral agreement. Details of the categories of textile products and their respective quantitative limits for 2000 are set out in Appendices I and II .

 

Operation of the Agreement

 

  1. Import into the EU of the products mentioned in paragraph 2 from the mainland of China is subject to import authorizations issued by the relevant authorities of the EU on presentation by the importers of corresponding export licences issued by the competent mainland authorities.

 

Reminder

 

  1. The Department wishes to remind traders that it is always in their interests to check with their European importers or buyers for advice in case of doubt.
