Egypt's Imposition of Import Requirements on
Certain Textiles from Hong Kong

The Department has recently received information that Egypt has imposed certain requirements on imports of certain textiles from Hong Kong with immediate effect.

2.Details of the import requirements are set out in the following paragraphs.

3.The Egyptian General Organization for Export and Import Control has been empowered by Ministerial Decree to check all textiles imported to the country, regardless of the country of origin. The importer¡¦s name and country of origin should be woven on the selvedge at the beginning and end of each piece of textiles imported into the country provided that the whole piece should not be less than 30 meter long.

4.Traders are required to provide the following information on the invoice of each consignment of textiles:

  1. Length of piece in meters
  2. Width of piece in centimetres
  3. Number of vertical threads weaving
  4. Number of horizontal threads in centimetre
  5. Number of vertical thread weaving
  6. Number horizontal thread weaving
  7. Material of vertical thread
  8. Material of horizontal thread
  9. Kind of printing
  10. Kind of dyeing
  11. Kind of finishing
  12. Weight of long meter in grams.

5.The Egyptian authorities further require that the importation of textiles should be made through the ports of Alexandria, Port Said, Damietta and Suez. The relevant Ministerial Decree identified the textile fabrics allowed to import to Egypt as per HS Codes set out at Appendix.

6. Traders are strongly advised to check with importers in Egypt to ascertain the exact requirements.

7. The Department will seek further clarification with the Egyptian authorities on the scope of the requirements and keep the trade informed through the issue of Commercial Information Circulars as appropriate.
