Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 84/2012

European Union (EU)* : Ban on Products Containing Biocide Dimethylfumarate

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 144/2011 of 3 March 2011, the European Commission has adopted a Decision to extend the validity for the ban on products containing biocide dimethylfumarate (DMF) to be placed or made available on the market. Details are set out in Commission Decision 2012/48/EU, which can be accessed through the following link:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2012:026:0035:0035:EN:PDF

DETAILS

2.The ban on products containing DMF was first introduced in May 2009. DMF is normally used by producers as a biocide in little pouches to prevent moulds that may cause products to deteriorate during storage and transportation in a humid climate. However, it has been found seriously affecting consumers who were in contact with the products, causing painful skin contact dermatitis. The Decision to extend the validity for the ban of DMF shall apply until 15 March 2013.
