Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 216/2012

European Union (EU)* : Ecodesign Requirements for Air Conditioners and Comfort Fans

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 560/2009 of 6 November 2009, the European Commission (the Commission) has adopted a Regulation specifying the ecodesign requirements for air conditioners and comfort fans. Details are set out in Commission Regulation (EU) No. 206/2012 (the Regulation), which can be accessed through the following link:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2012:072:0007:0027:EN:PDF

DETAILS

2.The Regulation establishes the ecodesign requirements for electric mains-operated air conditioners with a rated capacity up to 12kW for cooling, or heating if the product has no cooling function; as well as comfort fans with an electric fan power input up to 125W. However, it shall not apply to appliances that use non-electric energy sources nor to air conditioners of which the condenser-side or evaporator-side, or both, do not use air for heat transfer medium.

3.Details of the eco-design requirements for air conditioners and comfort fans are set out in Annex I of the Regulation. The conformity assessment requirements and the verification procedures for market surveillance purposes are set out in Annex II and Annex III respectively. The indicative benchmarks for best-performing air conditioners can be found in Annex IV. The ecodesign requirements shall be implemented in two stages, 1 January 2013 and 1 January 2014, to provide a sufficient timeframe for manufacturers to re-design products subject to the Regulation.
