Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 269/2011 dated 9 May 2011, the European Commission (the Commission) has adopted a Regulation to amend Regulation (EC) No. 889/2008 as regards detailed rules on the production and labelling of organic wines. Details are set out in the Commission Regulation (EU) No. 203/2012, which can be accessed through the following link:

DETAILS

2.Commission Regulation (EC) No. 889/2008 lays down the detailed rules for the implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products. In order to set up specific restrictions and limitations for certain oenological practices and processes for the production of organic wines, Regulation (EU) No. 203/2012 (the "Regulation") shall enter into force.

3.The Regulation has inserted a new Chapter stating the specific rules for the organic production of wine. Certain products and substances are authorized for use or addition in organic products of the wine sector and they are listed under Annex VIIIa of the Regulation. The oenological practices, processes and treatments that are either prohibited or permitted or subject to re-examination are also included. As for the labelling requirements, the "Organic logo of the EU" may be used provided that the wine-making process complies with the rules set out in the Regulation. Otherwise, the wine should be labelled as "wine made from organic grapes", without bearing the "Organic logo of the EU". Details of the specific rules on the making of organic wines are set out in Article 1 of the Regulation which shall apply from 1 August 2012.
