7 February 2011

Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 96/2011

European Union (EU)* : Ban on the use of Bisphenol A in plastic infant feeding bottles

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 65/2011 dated 26 January 2011 and No. 304/2010 dated 2 July 2010, the European Commission (the Commission) has adopted a Directive introducing a temporary ban on the use of Bisphenol A in the manufacture and placing on the market of polycarbonate infant feeding bottles. Details are set out in Commission Directive 2011/8/EC (the Directive), which can be accessed through the following link:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2011:026:0011:0014:EN:PDF

DETAILS

2. Considering the Danish risk assessment covering the evaluation of the specific neurobehavioural study and the review and evaluation of other recently published studies on Bisphenol A, there exists a possible particular vulnerability of infants to potential effects of Bisphenol A. Therefore, the Commission has taken a preventive measure that all Bisphenol A-containing infant feeding bottles on the EU market should be replaced by the middle of 2011. The Directive was entered into force on 1 February 2011.
