17 March 2010

Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 116/2010

European Union (EU)* : Ban on Products Containing Biocide Dimethylfumarate

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 162/2009 of 30 March 2009, the European Commission has adopted a Decision to prolong the ban on products containing biocide dimethylfumarate (DMF) to be placed or made available on the market. Details are set out in Commission Decision 2010/153/EU (the Decision), which can be accessed through the following link:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2010:063:0021:0021:EN:PDF

DETAIL

  1. The ban on products containing DMF was first introduced in May 2009. DMF is normally used by producers as a biocide in little pouches to prevent moulds that may cause products to deteriorate during storage and transportation in a humid climate. However, it has been found seriously affecting consumers who were in contact with the products, causing painful skin contact dermatitis. The current Decision prolongs the validity of the ban to last until 15 March 2011.
