European Union (EU)* :Restrictions on the Use of Certain Chemical Substances in Cosmetic Products
In the light of technical progress, the European Commission (EC) has adopted a Directive to tighten the existing control on the use of chemical substances in cosmetic products. A copy of the Commission Directive 2002/34/EC is appended (pdf format) to this Circular for reference.
DETAILS
- The Commission Directive sets out the restrictions on certain chemical substances used in cosmetic products. The use of radioactive substances, some specified fragrance compounds as well as methyleugenol, lithium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, etc. is restricted. Member States are required to bring into force the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with the Directive by 15 April 2003 and ensure that cosmetic products containing the restricted substances which are supplied to the final consumer after 15 April 2004 comply with the provisions of the Directive.
