Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 48/00
European Union (EU) : Regulation on Labelling of Foodstuffs Containing
Genetically Modified Additives and Flavourings
The European Commission (EC) has adopted a regulation providing for specific additional labelling requirements for food and food ingredients intended for final consumers and mass caterers which contain additives and/or flavourings comprising or produced from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) (the specified additives and flavourings). Foodstuffs with ingredients containing the specified additives and flavourings must be labelled as produced from GMOs in the required format. Other additional labelling requirements include indication of the composition and nutritional value of the food, and indication of whether the specified additives and flavourings in the food may affect the health of certain sections of the population or will give rise to ethical concerns. The regulation enters into force on 10 April 2000.
