Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 173/00

European Union (EU)* : Database on Tariffs on Europa

The European Commission (EC) has created a database on tariff information which is available free on the EC's Europa web-site (http://europa.eu.int/comm/taxation_customs/dds/en/home.htm). The database, TARIC, contains information on the EU's Common Customs Tariff, as well as tariff-related trade measures, such as anti-dumping duties and tariff preferences under the EU's Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Scheme

  1. To access the database, a 10-digit TARIC code and the country of origin/destination of the product should be entered. The TARIC code is the EU's tariff classification system which applies to all imports of goods from non-EU countries/territories to the EU. It consists of a 8-digit CN code (similar to Hong Kong's Harmonized System (HS) code) and two extra digits coded for further subdivisions of goods. The tariff rate shown is normally applied to the product from all places. Additional tariff information is also provided where it is applicable, such as the preferential rate when the product enjoys tariff preferences under GSP schemes, or the tariff rate when the product is subject to anti-dumping duties. Apart from showing the tariff rates, corresponding reference to the relevant EC regulation/decision setting the tariff rate is also provided.

  2. Separately, most of the EC's regulations/decisions published in Official Journals are also available in the Europa web-site (http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/search.html).
