Commercial Information Circular No. 50/96
Germany : Regulation on Harmful or Carcinogenic Substances
Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 25/96 of 7 March 1996, the Department has received information that the German Federal Ministry of Health has published the preliminary testing method for the detection of the use of banned azo colourants in coloured textile articles. A copy of an unofficial English translation of the testing method is appended to this circular for reference.
Details
- In end February 1996, the German Federal Ministry of Health announced the preliminary testing method for the detection of azocolours in the German Federal Health Gazette. The testing method describes a procedure to detect the use of banned azo colourants in the manufacture and treatment of coloured textiles, particularly textiles made of cellulose and protein fibres (such as cotton, viscose, wool and silk). The detection of banned azo colourants in synthetic fibres made of polyester and polyacrylate may require additional steps (such as extraction of the sample using an appropriate organic solvent), and the details are yet to be published.
- The Department will continue to monitor developments and keep the trade informed as appropriate.
