Mexico : Modified Labelling Requirements for Pre-packaged Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages
The Mexican government has modified the labelling requirements for pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverages as set out in NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010.
DETAILS
2.The modified standard, among others, sets out new labelling requirement that aims at providing consumers with clear information about the content of critical nutrients that pose health risks in excessive consumption. It requires a front-of-package octagonal warning on pre-packaged products in excess of specific nutrient thresholds for calories, sugar, saturated fat, trans fat and sodium, and precautionary statements for products that include caffeine and sweeteners and are not recommended for consumption by children.
3.The new labelling requirement will enter into force on 1 October 2020 while other provisions in the modification will enter into force on 1 April 2021 or apply in phases from 1 October 2020 to 1 October 2025.
