US : Section 301 Tariffs on Mainland Products Worth US$200 billion - Planned Increase of Tariff from 10% to 25% on 10 May 2019

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 159/2019 dated 26 February 2019 regarding the postponement of the tariff increase from 10% to 25% on certain Mainland products worth approximately US$200 billion, the US President announced on 5 May 2019 that he plans to increase the additional tariffs from 10% to 25% on the Mainland products concerned effective on 10 May 2019.

DETAILS

2.The US had earlier postponed its plans to increase the additional tariffs from 10% to 25% on certain Mainland products worth approximately US$200 billion under the Section 301 investigation, which were originally scheduled for 1 January 2019 and subsequently rescheduled for 2 March 2019. In the past few months, both the US and the Mainland have conducted serval rounds of trade talks with a view to reaching an agreement.

3.On 5 May 2019, the US President announced that he plans to increase the additional tariffs from 10% to 25% on certain Mainland products worth approximately US$200 billion effective on 10 May 2019 (US time).

5.The outcome of the negotiations between the US and Mainland may affect whether the US would implement the subject tariff increase on 10 May 2019. Our Department would closely monitor the developments and keep the trade posted.
