Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 472/2016
Mexico : Seeking Comments on a Proposal to Establish Maximum Formaldehyde Emissions and Content Limits in Certain Wooden Products
The Mexico's Ministry of Economy is seeking comments on a proposal to establish maximum formaldehyde emissions and content limits in domestically-produced and imported wood chipboard and wood fibreboard made with urea-formaldehyde resins as well as products made from wood chipboard or wood fibreboard. The deadline for submitting comments will be on 18 June 2016 and the final regulation will enter into force 60 days after the date of its publication in Mexico's official journal.
DETAILS
2.Mexican authorities note that formaldehyde required in the formulation of urea-formaldehyde adhesive resins for the production of wood-based panels is a highly volatile gas at normal pressure and its presence in the air in high concentrations can pose a health hazard to humans. In this regard, the Mexico government is proposing to set maximum emissions and content limits for various wood chipboard and fibreboard products, and those emissions and content would be measured in accordance with the provisions setting out in Chapters 7.8 and 7.9 of Mexican Norm NMX-C-462-ONNCCE. Importers would be required to submit for each shipment of subject merchandise a certificate of compliance issued by a certification body accredited and approved by the Ministry of Economy. For more details, please refer to the relevant official notice (in Spanish) at http://dof.gob.mx/nota_detalle.php?codigo=5433570&fecha=19/04/2016.
