The National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO) of the Brazilian government has adopted a regulation which prohibits the sale of jewellery containing more than 0.01% by weight of cadmium and/or more than 0.03% by weight of lead. Importers and manufacturers will not be allowed to sell non-compliant merchandise by 26 January 2019 while retailers and other parties will be barred from selling non-compliant merchandise from 26 January 2021.
2.The ban covers children and adult jewellery sold by itself or as part of another product. The term "jewellery" includes any adornment for males or females, whether or not made of metal, whose use may put the product in contact with the human body, such as hair accessories, bracelets, necklaces, rings, piercings, adornments worn on a person's wrist (including watches), cufflinks and earrings. The ban also covers metal beads and other metal components intended for the manufacture of jewellery pieces.
