Commercial Information Circular No. 555/2015

Brazil : Conformity Certification Requirements for Lead-acid Batteries and Infant Cribs

The National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO) of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil issued Decrees No. 199/2015 on 16 April 2015, and No. 243/2015 on 21 May 2015 to approve or modify the conformity certifcation requirements for certain (a) lead-acid batteries; and (b) infant cribs.

(a) Certain Lead-acid Batteries for Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles

Further to Commercial Information Circular (CIC) No. 453/2012 of 13 June 2012 of our Department, the INMETRO issued Decree No. 199/2015 to modify conformity certification requirements for lead-acid batteries for motor vehicles and motorcycles, except those with a nominal voltage of six to eight volts. The compliance dates are revised as follows:

  Compliance Date Application Criteria
(i) 1 June 2015 manufacture and import of such products
(ii) 1 January 2016 domestic sale of such products by manufacturers and importers
(iii) 1 June 2016 domestic sale of such products by all other parties

(b) Certain Infant Cribs

The INMETRO issued Decree No. 243/2015 requiring all infant cribs manufactured, imported and/or sold in Brazil must be designed in a way that a gap larger than 30 millimetres is never formed between the crib sides and ends and the mattress, when a mattress with the dimensions specified by the manufacturer is used. When the crib's sides or ends is constructed with flexible materials, a space larger than 30 mm cannot be formed when applying a perpendicular force of 150 N from inside the crib towards its outside, at any point of the flexible material.
