Mexico : New Sanitary and Labelling Requirements for Alcoholic Beverages
The Mexican government has recently issued new sanitary and labelling requirements for alcoholic beverages. The new sanitary requirements will enter into force on 21 July 2015 and the new labelling requirements will be implemented on 22 March 2016.
DETAILS
2.The new standard updates the current technical regulations on alcoholic beverages which have been in place since 1 January 1998. Under the new requirements, alcoholic beverages will be required to (i) comply with the provisions of NOM-251-SSA1-2009; (ii) use water strictly for human consumption and comply with the requirements of NOM-127-SSA1-1994; and (iii) use vegetable-based ethyl alcohol as a raw material with certain content limits on other ingredients such as methanol, aldehydes, furfural, etc. The standard also includes requirements concerning beverages with low energy content, optional ingredients, additives, authenticity, sampling, test methods, labelling, packing, conformity assessment and compliance.
