Commercial Information Circular No. 270/2015

Uruguay : Clarification on Requirements for Purchases delivered by International Postal Shipments

The Uruguayan government issued Decree No. 1739/2014 on 9 December 2014 to clarify the requirements for purchases delivered by international postal shipments.

2.The following purchases delivered by international postal shipments will be exempted from import duties:
  1. international postal shipments not delivered by an express services company, with a value not exceeding US$50, and only contain:
    1. family gifts, such as edible products, garments, etc.;
    2. used items; or
    3. goods for personal use.
  2. international postal shipments delivered by an express services company, with a value not exceeding US$200.

3.The parcel eligible for exemption of import duties must:

  1. be received by an individual of legal age;
  2. have no commercial value;
  3. not exceed five shipments per person per calendar year.  This limit does not apply to books and medicaments for personal use; and
  4. be paid by an international credit or debit card.  The holder of the credit card must be the buyer and the recipient of the parcel; and
  5. not have a unit weight of each parcel exceeding 20 kilograms per parcel.
