US : FDA Proposed Rule on Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in the Federal Register (FR) of 5 February 2014 a proposed rule designed to prevent the contamination of human and animal food during transportation. 2.This proposed rule establishes requirements for shippers, carriers by motor vehicle and rail vehicle, and receivers engaged in the transportation of food, including food for animals, to use sanitary transportation practices to ensure the safety of the food they transport. The rule also applies to a person outside the US, such as an exporter, who ships food to the US in an international freight container by oceangoing vessel or in an air freight container and arranges for the transfer of the intact container in the US onto a motor vehicle or rail vehicle for transportation in US commerce, provided that the food will be consumed or distributed in the US.
