Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 453/2012
Brazil : Technical Requirements for Lead-acid Batteries or Electric Accumulators for Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles
The National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO) of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil issued Decree No. 239/2012 to establish technical requirements for lead-acid batteries or electric accumulators for motor vehicles and motorcycles for starting combustion engines. The Decree came in force on 11 May 2012.
2.The Decree requires the lead-acid batteries to be clean, dry, without any apparent damage or electrolyte residue, and must be marked or labelled with certain information in Portuguese. Also, the actual batteries' weight with ±5% variation from the declared information on the label is admissible, or the batteries will be deemed non-compliant. Batteries must also comply with the mercury and cadmium content limits, i.e. content of mercury and cadmium must be less than or equal to 0.005% and 0.010% in weight respectively.
3.For details of the above technical requirements, traders are advised to consult their importers in Brazil and/or the above Brazilian Decree (in Portuguese), which is available at: http://www.inmetro.gov.br/legislacao/rtac/pdf/RTAC001823.pdf.
