Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 113/2008
US : Corrections to the New Flammability Standard for Mattress Sets
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a Federal Register (FR) notice on 6 February 2008 to announce some corrections to the flammability standard for mattresses and mattress and foundation sets (mattress sets). A copy (pdf format) of the FR notice is appended to this circular for reference.
DETAILS
-
The federal flammability standard concerned was issued by the CPSC on 15 March 2006 to address mattress fires ignited by open flame sources, including matches, candles, lighters and other related scenarios. The standard, which took effect 1 July 2007, applies to mattress sets manufactured, imported or renovated on or after that date. For details of the standard, please refer to Commercial Information Circular No. 109/2006 dated 22 March 2006.
- The corrections, which were announced and became effective on 6 February 2008, rectify typographical errors in the standard, clarify technical aspects of running the flammability test required by the standard, and clarify that the certification statement on the mattress set label may appear in another language in addition to English. As stated in the FR notice, the corrections clarify the technical aspects of the flammability testing and labelling provisions, and do not change the substantive obligations of mattress manufacturers and importers.
