Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 109/2006
US : New Flammability Standard for Mattress Sets
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published in the Federal Register (FR) notice of 15 March 2006 a new mandatory flammability standard for mattresses and mattress and foundation sets (mattress sets).
DETAILS
- This new standard addresses mattress fires ignited by open flame sources, including matches, candles, lighters, and other related scenarios. Under the new rule, imported mattresses and mattress sets must meet the same requirements under this standard as domestically produced ones. In other words, mattresses and mattress sets produced outside the US must be tested in accordance with the procedures outlined in the standard and must meet certain specified criteria, as well as quality assurance, record-keeping and labelling requirements, before they may be introduced into commerce in the US. The standard will become effective on 1 July 2007 and applies to mattresses and mattress sets manufactured, imported or renovated on or after that date. For details of the new standard, interested parties may download the FR notice at http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20061800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2006/pdf/06-2206.pdf. Hardcopies of the above FR notice are also available in the Americas (Commercial Relations) Branch of the Department for reference.
