HONG KONG - TAIWAN TRADE RELATIONS
TAIWAN AND HONG KONG ARE IMPORTANT TRADING PARTNERS
- In 2024, Taiwan was Hong Kong's 2nd largest trading partner. Hong Kong was Taiwan's 5th largest trading partner in 2024.
- Total merchandise trade between Hong Kong and Taiwan amounted to HK$697.4 billion in 2024, increased by 4.9% from 2023. The average annual growth rate from 2020 to 2024 was 8.4%.
- In 2024, Hong Kong's domestic export of goods to Taiwan amounted to HK$5.5 billion. Major domestic exports to Taiwan included jewellery, goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares, and other articles of precious or semi-precious materials; non-ferrous metals; and metalliferous ores and metal scrap.
- Hong Kong's re-export of goods to Taiwan totalled HK$134.9 billion. Major re-exports were electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof; telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment; and office machines and automatic data processing machines.
- In 2024, Hong Kong imported HK$557.0 billion worth of goods from Taiwan. Major imports included electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof; office machines and automatic data processing machines; and telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment.
HONG KONG IS AN IMPORTANT ENTREPOT FOR MAINLAND-TAIWAN TRADE
- Hong Kong is an important entrepĂ´t for merchandise trade between Taiwan and the Mainland of China. Re-export trade between the two economies through Hong Kong amounted to HK$662.9 billion in 2024.
HONG KONG IS AN IMPORTANT LOCATION FOR TAIWAN INTERESTS
- Hong Kong is a separate customs territory recognised by the World Trade Organization as a member.
- Hong Kong welcomes overseas investment and offers an environment in which there is a free flow of capital and return on investment without exchange controls.
- In survey covering about 9 960 companies in Hong Kong with parent companies located outside Hong Kong, as of June 2024, there were around 30 regional headquarters, 100 regional offices and 280 local offices with parent companies located in Taiwan*.
- Taiwan was the 10th largest source of external investment in Hong Kong at end-2023. Taiwan's inward direct investment in Hong Kong amounted to HK$196.9 billion, accounting for 1.2% of the total.
