Hong Kong to participate in PECC 21st General Meeting
Friday, May 31, 2013

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation:

The Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC), Professor Stephen Cheung, will lead an HKCPEC delegation to participate at the 21st General Meeting of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC XXI) from June 2 to 5 in Vancouver, Canada.

The PECC XXI is to be held in conjunction with the Canada-Asia 2013 Conference, which is organised by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. The event will comprise different plenary sessions on topics including key trends shaping the Asia Pacific, Asia Pacific trade talks, financial market development and integration.

Also attending the PECC XXI will be one youth delegate who is currently a student at a local university. The youth delegate will have opportunities to exchange views on various regional co-operation issues with youth delegates from other economies including Canada, China, Ecuador, Indonesia, Korea, New Zealand, Peru, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam, and participate in the graduate student programme arranged by the Canadian organiser.

The HKCPEC has been supporting youth delegates to attend the PECC General Meeting since 2005. This outreach initiative for youths is highly commended within the PECC community, and has become a role model for other PECC member committees.

The HKCPEC was established in March 1990 to co-ordinate Hong Kong's participation in the PECC. In line with the nature of the PECC, the composition of the HKCPEC is tripartite, comprising members from the government, academia and the business sector.

The PECC is a non-government organisation set up in 1980 to develop closer co-operation in trade and economic issues among economies in the region.

Currently the PECC has 26 member committees, of which 23 are full members representing the economies of Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Colombia; Ecuador; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; Mongolia; New Zealand; the Pacific Islands Forum; Peru; the Philippines; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States of America; and Vietnam. The PECC also has one associate member, France (Pacific Territories), and two institutional members, the Pacific Trade and Development Conference and the Pacific Basin Economic Council.
