Press Release

Hong Kong to participate in PECC meeting
Wednesday, October 20, 2010

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation:

Hong Kong will attend the 19th General Meeting of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC XIX), the plenary forum of the PECC, from tomorrow to Friday (October 21 to 22), in Tokyo, Japan.

The theme of PECC XIX is "PECC at 30: New Vision for APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) and Toward Further Regional Economic Co-operation". The meeting will comprise different plenary sessions on topics on economic recovery and growth in Asia and the Pacific, towards resilient societies, human security, climate change, and a post-2010 trade agenda for APEC. The meeting will conclude with a roundtable discussion on the future of global and regional co-operation with regard to G-20 and APEC.

The Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC), Professor Sung Yun-wing, will lead a HKCPEC delegation to PECC XIX.

Also attending the PECC XIX meeting will be a group of youth delegates, comprising current students and fresh graduates of local universities. In Tokyo, the youth delegates will have opportunities to exchange views and experiences on various regional co-operation issues with youth delegates from other economies including Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Chinese Taipei, and participate in a visit programme arranged by the Japanese organiser, the Japan National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation.

The HKCPEC has been supporting youth delegates to attend the PECC General Meeting since 2005. This outreach initiative for youths is highly commended within the PECC community, and has become a role model for other PECC member committees.

The HKCPEC was established in March 1990 to co-ordinate Hong Kong's participation in the PECC. In line with the nature of the PECC, the composition of the HKCPEC is tripartite, comprising members from the government, academia and the business sector.

The PECC is the only non-governmental official observer of APEC. It was set up in 1980 to develop closer co-operation in trade and economic issues among economies in the region. The PECC has been an influential platform for launching research studies and policy dialogues on issues affecting growth, stability and co-operation in Asia and the Pacific. In response to the global financial and economic crisis in 2008, the PECC embarked on various initiatives in advising policy-makers and inter-governmental organisations in the region, focusing on restoring growth in a structured, balanced and sustainable manner.

Currently, PECC has a total of 26 member committees, of which 23 are full members representing the economies of Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Colombia; Ecuador; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; Mongolia; New Zealand; the Pacific Islands Forum; Peru; the Philippines; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States of America; and Vietnam. The PECC also has one associate member, France (Pacific Territories), and two institutional members, the Pacific Trade and Development Conference and the Pacific Basin Economic Council.
