Seminar on "Measures to support SMEs"
Wednesday, January 7, 2009

The Trade and Industry Department, in conjunction with the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, the Hong Kong Chinese Importers' and Exporters' Association, the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, will hold a seminar next Thursday (January 15) on measures to support SMEs.

The business community in Hong Kong is facing unprecedented challenges in the midst of the global financial turmoil. Some SMEs are facing liquidity problems. In view of this, the Government has earlier introduced a series of measures to help SMEs tide over the financial crisis, including measures to enhance the SME Loan Guarantee Scheme and the launching of a new Special Loan Guarantee Scheme.

The seminar brings together Government officials, representatives from supporting organisations and lending institutions to talk about Government's support measures for SMEs, financing solutions provided by lending institutions and their usual considerations in approving loan applications, as well as ideas on exploring new markets and reduce operating costs, etc. Some participating lending institutions will also set up counters on site to answer questions from SMEs.

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, will attend the seminar and deliver the opening remarks. Speakers of the seminar include representatives from the Trade and Industry Department, the Hong Kong Export Credit Insurance Corporation, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Productivity Council, HSBC and Bank of China (Hong Kong). There will also be a question and answer session and experience sharing session with some SME operators.

The seminar will be held on January 15 at 2.15pm in Room 401, Main Wing, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It will be conducted in Cantonese, with English simultaneous interpretation. Admission is free.

Interested parties are invited to register with the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (telephone: 2732 3199). Seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
