Press Release 2008

2008/10 SME Mentorship Programme invites applications
Monday, October 27, 2008

The Trade and Industry Department will begin accepting applications tomorrow (October 28) for the 2008/10 SME Mentorship Programme, which is organised by its Support and Consultation Centre for SMEs (SUCCESS) with 61 leading industrial and trade organisations and professional and academic bodies.

"The SME Mentorship Programme aims to provide an opportunity for SME entrepreneurs who are at the early stage of establishment to learn from and be guided by accomplished entrepreneurs, senior executives and professionals through one-on-one free counselling. SME entrepreneurs can learn entrepreneurship, enhance competitiveness, expand their business network and widen their exposure through the programme," said a department spokesman.

"Mentors will listen to mentees' views and problems in running their business, share with mentees their thinking and experience, and give them advice.

"Since the introduction of the SME Mentorship Programme in 2000, a total of 356 volunteer mentors have participated in the programmes, providing free counselling and advice to over 700 mentees," he added.

The mentorship period will last for 12 months after the mentee has been matched with a mentor, during which the mentor and mentee are encouraged to meet at least three times. SUCCESS will also organise various activities such as seminars, workshops and visits for mentors and mentees to share experiences and broaden business networks.

SME entrepreneurs who own and actively run a company that is legally registered in Hong Kong and has been established for less than five years and employs fewer than 20 employees in Hong Kong are eligible to apply.

Application forms and programme details can be obtained from SUCCESS, co-organisers' offices, District Offices of the Home Affairs Department and the SUCCESS Website (www.success.tid.gov.hk).
