Appointment to HKCPEC for new term

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (March 31) announced appointments to the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Co-operation (HKCPEC).

Chairman and Professor of Department of Economics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Professor Sung Yun Wing has been newly appointed as chairman of the HKCPEC. The new term of the HKCPEC, covering two years from tomorrow (April 1), will have five academics, six businessmen and two government members.

"We are very pleased that Professor Sung has agreed to accept the chairmanship. With his long involvement in the work of the HKCPEC and the Trade Policy Forum Hong Kong Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), we are confident that Professor Sung will lead the HKCPEC to continue to contribute constructively to regional economic co-operation," a government spokesman said.

"We are also very grateful to Professor Edward Chen, the outgoing HKCPEC chairman, for his invaluable contributions to the committee during his tenure. Under his chairmanship, the HKCPEC has been very successful in promoting public understanding of the issues of regional economic development and co-operation. The Youth Learning Project, an educational project he spearheaded, has won wide acclaim from other member committees of the PECC," the spokesman said.

Established in March, 1990, the HKCPEC comprises business leaders, academics and government officials, who advise the Government on matters relating to Hong Kong's participation in the PECC. Hong Kong has become a member of the PECC since May, 1991.

The PECC, tripartite in nature, serves as an independent forum for discussing trade and economic issues, and fostering closer economic co-operation in the Pacific region.

Currently, the PECC has 26 members, of which 22 are full members representing the economies of Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Colombia; Ecuador; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; the Pacific Islands Forum; Peru; the Philippines; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States; and Vietnam; two associate members representing France (Pacific Territories) and Mongolia; and two institutional members which are the Pacific Trade and Development Conference and Pacific Basin Economic Council.
