2007-08 SME Mentorship Programme invites applications

The Trade and Industry Department will begin accepting applications tomorrow (January 9) for the 2007/08 SME Mentorship Programme, which is organised by its Support and Consultation Centre for SMEs (SUCCESS) with 51 leading business and professional organisations.

"The SME Mentorship Programme aims to provide an opportunity for SME entrepreneurs, who are at the early stage of establishment, to learn from and be guided by mentors, who are accomplished entrepreneurs, senior executives and professionals, through one-on-one free counselling. SME entrepreneurs can learn entrepreneurship, enhance competitiveness, expand their business network and widen exposure through the programme," said a department spokesman.

"Mentors will listen to mentees' views and problems in running their business, share with mentees their thinking and experience, and give them advice.

"Since the introduction of the SME Mentorship Programme in 2000, a total of 288 volunteer mentors have participated in the SME Mentorship Programmes providing free counselling and advice to over 540 mentees," he added.

Each SME entrepreneur admitted to the programme will be matched with a mentor. During the nine-month mentorship period, the mentor and his/her mentee will meet at least three times for one-on-one counselling. SUCCESS will also organise various activities such as seminars, workshops and visits for them to share experiences and their broaden business network.

SME entrepreneurs who own and actively run a company that is legally registered in Hong Kong and has been established for less than five years and employs fewer than 20 employees in Hong Kong is eligible to apply.

Application forms and programme details are obtainable from SUCCESS, Co-organisers' Offices, District Offices of the Home Affairs Department and the SUCCESS Website (www.success.tid.gov.hk).

Please return the completed application form and the supporting documents in person or by mail to SUCCESS (address: M/F, Trade and Industry Department Tower, 700 Nathan Road, Kowloon; opening hours: Monday to Friday 8.45am – 6pm) on or before February 8, 2007.
