NGOs Roundtable Forum webcast live
Thursday, October 13, 2005

A roundtable forum will be held on Sunday (October 16) for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to express their views on the World Trade Organization (WTO) Sixth Ministerial Conference (Hong Kong Ministerial Conference) to be held in Hong Kong in December.

The WTO's new Director-General, Mr Pascal Lamy, and the Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr John Tsang, who is also the chairman of the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference, will be the keynote speakers at the forum which will be held from 2.30pm to 5pm on October 16 at Rayson Huang Theatre, the University of Hong Kong.

Oxfam Hong Kong Executive Director Mr Chong Chan-yau; Chairperson of Hong Kong People's Alliance on WTO Miss Elizabeth Tang; Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong Professor Richard Wong; and Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce Dr Eden Woon will be the speakers in a panel discussion session.

Representatives from NGOs will participate in the discussion in an open floor session that follows.

A government spokesman said the Hong Kong Government had maintained regular contact with the NGOs with a view to facilitating the conduct of civil society activities in the run-up to, and during, the Ministerial Conference.

"The roundtable forum provides a good opportunity for NGOs to have direct dialogue with the host government and WTO Secretariat on various issues related to the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference," the spokesman said.

The full session of the forum will be webcast live on the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference website www.wtomc6.gov.hk. The forum is also open to the media. NGOs can make reservations with the WTO Sixth Ministerial Conference Co-ordination Office in Hong Kong through e-mail, ngo@wtomc6.gov.hk, or by phone, at (+852) 2911-0374, by noon on Saturday (October 15). Priority will be given to those NGOs that have applied for registration for the conference.
