Friday, September 2, 2005

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Co-operation:

Hong Kong will participate in the 16th General Meeting of the Pacific Economic Co-operation Council (PECC XVI), the plenary forum of PECC, to be held from September 5 to 7, in Seoul, Korea.

The theme of PECC XVI is "Towards a Pacific Community: Renewing the Commitment". The meeting will examine the validity and viability of the idea and vision behind the Pacific Community in light of the new global economic and political environment with a view to finding a clear roadmap for its realisation.

The Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Co-operation (HKCPEC) and President of Lingnan University, Prof Edward Chen, will lead a strong 17-person Hong Kong delegation to PECC XVI.

Also attending the meeting will be the Vice-chairman of the HKCPEC and Deputy Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology (Commerce & Industry), Mr. Philip Yung, representatives from the academic and government sectors and the winning teams of a Youth Learning Project co-organised by HKCPEC and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups earlier this year. The subject of the Youth Learning Project is Pacific Economic Co-operation. It aims at enhancing our young people's knowledge on regional co-operation and nurturing their analytical minds and creative thinking skills. The Youth Learning Project is a success with more than 280 participants.

The PECC XVI will be preceded by a Joint Standing Committee and Co-ordinating Group meeting on Sunday (September 4) which will discuss the policy issues and determine the work programme of PECC.

PECC is a non-governmental organisation set up in 1980 with the purpose of developing closer cooperation among economies in the region in trade and economic policy issues.

Currently, PECC has 25 member committees, of which 23 are full members representing the economies of Australia, Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Colombia; Ecuador; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; the Pacific Islands Forum; Peru; the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States; and Viet Nam; and two are associate members representing France (Pacific Territories) and Mongolia.

The PECC also has two institutional members which are the Pacific Trade and Development Conference (PAFTAD) and Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC).
