2005/06 SME Mentorship Programme invites applications
Tuesday, May 24, 2005

The Trade and Industry Department (TID) invites SME proprietors to join the 2005/06 SME Mentorship Programme, which is run by its Support and Consultation Centre for SMEs (SUCCESS) in partnership with 49 leading business and professional organisations. SME proprietors may apply to SUCCESS between now and 24 June 2005, a TID spokesman said today (24 May).

The Programme was first launched in 2000. It aims to help SME proprietors build entrepreneurship, develop leadership and enhance competitiveness by providing them with an opportunity to learn from and be guided by mentors, who are accomplished entrepreneurs, senior executives, and professionals, through one-on-one free counselling. Mentors will listen to the views and problems of the mentees, share with them their thinking and experience, and provide guidance. Over the years, 230 volunteer mentors have participated in the Programmes providing counselling and advice to over 400 mentees.

The mentorship period will last for nine months. Apart from meeting mentors, SME proprietors participating in the Programme will be invited to attend workshops, seminars and company visits organised by SUCCESS and the Co-organisers. These activities are tailor-made to enrich their business knowledge and widen their network.

"Accounting for over 98 per cent of all local enterprises and employing 60 percent of employees in the private sector, SMEs are the pillar of Hong Kong's economy. The Government attaches great importance in supporting SMEs at various stages of development. This Programme underlines that commitment," the TID spokesman said.

SME proprietors of locally registered companies which employ fewer than 20 employees in Hong Kong and are established for less than five years are eligible to participate in the 2005/06 SME Mentorship Programme.

Application forms can be obtained from:
SUCCESS, M/F., Trade and Industry Department Tower, 700 Nathan Road, Kowloon;
Offices of the 49 Co-organisers;
District Offices of the Home Affairs Department;
SUCCESS' website (www.success.tid.gov.hk)

Completed application forms should be returned to SUCCESS by 24 June, 2005.
