Appointments to HKCPEC for new term
Tuesday, March 30, 2004

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (March 30) announced the appointments to the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC) for two years, effective from April 1, 2004.

Professor Edward Chen, President of Lingnan University, has been reappointed as the Chairman of the HKCPEC. The HKCPEC for the new term will have seven academics, six businessmen and three Government members.

Established in March 1990, the HKCPEC comprises business leaders, academics and Government officials, who advise the Government on matters related to Hong Kong's participation in the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC). Hong Kong became a member of PECC in May 1991.

PECC, tripartite in nature, serves as an independent forum for discussing trade and economic issues, and fostering closer economic co-operation in the Pacific region.

PECC has 23 full members - Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Colombia; Ecuador; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Peru; the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States; Viet Nam and the Pacific Islands Forum. There are also two associate members: France (Pacific Territories) and Mongolia. In addition, PECC has two institutional members, which are the Pacific Trade and Development Conference (PAFTAD) and Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC).

"We are very pleased that Professor Chen has agreed to take up the chairmanship again amid his heavy commitments in academic affairs and other public services. During his tenure as the HKCPEC Chairman in the past two years, he has demonstrated his ability in leading the committee's participation in PECC activities. We are confident that, under his capable leadership, the HKCPEC will continue to contribute constructively to regional economic co-operation," a Government spokesman said.
