Appointments to the HKCPEC for a new term
Friday, March 29, 2002

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (March 29) announced the appointments to the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC) for two years, effective from April 1, 2002.

Professor Edward Chen, President of Lingnan University, has been newly appointed as the Chairman of the HKCPEC. The new term of the HKCPEC will have 11 academics, 9 businessmen and 9 Government members.

Established in March 1990, the HKCPEC comprises business leaders, academics and Government officials, who advise the Government on matters related to Hong Kong's participation in the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC). Hong Kong became a member of PECC in May 1991.

PECC, tripartite in nature, serves as an independent forum for discussing trade and economic issues, and fostering closer economic co-operation in the Pacific region.

PECC has 23 full members which include Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Colombia; Ecuador; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Peru; the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States; Viet Nam and the South Pacific Forum. There are also 2 associate members: France (Pacific Territories) and Mongolia. In addition, PECC also has 2 institutional members, which are the Pacific Trade and Development Conference (PAFTAD) and Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC).

"We are very pleased that Prof. Chen has agreed to take up the chairmanship amid his heavy commitments in academic affairs and other public services. He has been involved in the work of PECC for a number of years and was the Coordinator of the PECC Trade Policy Forum during 1999 to 2001. We are confident that, under his capable leadership, the HKCPEC will continue to contribute constructively to regional economic co-operation," a Government spokesman said.

"We are also very grateful to Dr. William Fung, the outgoing HKCPEC Chairman, for his invaluable contributions to the Committee during his tenure, especially for his strong leadership in the last 2 years that led to the success of PECC XIV which Hong Kong hosted last November," the Government spokesman added.
