DGTI to attend the First APEC Senior Officials' Meeting in 2002

The Director-General of Trade and Industry, Mr Joshua Law, will depart for Mexico City tomorrow (February 26) to attend the First APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM I) in 2002 to be held on February 27-28.

The overall framework for APEC 2002 is to implement APEC's shared vision of expanding the benefits of economic growth and development. To this end, SOM I will deliberate on ways to implement the Shanghai Accord which was announced by APEC Leaders in Shanghai in last October. Senior Officials will consider steps to broaden APEC's action agenda with new issues such as the new economy, work programme to develop targets on appropriate trade policies for the new economy, actions to implement the APEC Trade Facilitation Principles, and measures to strengthen APEC's efforts in economic and technical cooperation as well as capacity building.

Moreover, SOM I will also consider preliminary reports from relevant APEC fora on progress and plans on concrete actions to implement APEC Leaders' Statement on Counter-Terrorism.

The Hong Kong, China delegation to SOM I and related committees/sub-committees meetings comprises officials from Commerce and Industry Bureau, Financial Services Bureau, Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau, Trade and Industry Department, Customs and Excise Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Immigration Department, Innovation and Technology Commission, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data.

Member economies of APEC are: Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; the People's Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; the Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; the Republic of the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States of America and Viet Nam.
