Wednesday, February 28, 2001

On Thursday (March 1), a large-scale conference on the impact of globalization and accession of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) will be held in Hong Kong.

The conference, entitled "Opportunities for the Business Sector in a Changing Global Environment", is organized by the Trade and Industry Department. The one-day conference will focus on changes in the business environment as a result of increasing globalization and rapid technology advancement; the importance and relevance of the WTO to the business community; and the implications of China's imminent accession to the WTO and the opportunities this will bring to Hong Kong businessmen.

World-renowned trade and international law experts, prominent academics, highly-regarded professionals, successful businessmen, and experienced consultants will share with conference participants their views on these topics of relevance to the business community.

Mr Peter Woo, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, will be the keynote luncheon speaker. The Acting Secretary for Commerce and Industry, Miss Yvonne Choi, will give the opening remarks at the conference.

Over 250 participants representing 40 local chambers of commerce, trade associations and professional bodies are expected to take part in the conference.
