DGTI to lead delegation to attend APEC Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs Forum
Monday, July 9, 2001

The Director-General of Trade and Industry, Mr. Joshua Law, today (9 July) leads a 10-person delegation to participate in the APEC Young Leaders/Entrepreneurs Forum being held in Beijing and Shanghai from 9 to 14 July.

The Forum is jointly hosted by China and Canada, against the background of information and communication technology revolution. It is recognised that such revolution is bringing new challenges as well as opportunities to APEC economies, and that young leaders will act as agents of change to consolidate and strengthen APEC member economies' commitments in trade liberalisation and facilitation, and economic and technical cooperation.

The Forum will be held under the theme of "Building Common Prosperity by Meeting Challenges of Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs in the New Economy." The Forum aims to build critical leadership skills, create partnerships among participants from APEC economies, and increase the understanding of technological linkages between economic, business and policy issues.

The Forum will be opened in Beijing by a State Leader of the Central People's Government and a Canadian official. Afterwards, delegates will travel to Shanghai where there will be two days of roundtable workshops on two themes: Information and Communication Technologies in Business and Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Concurrently, the Youth Virtual Trade Show will be held. This is to provide an opportunity for delegates to promote their goods and services online, as well as continued interaction after the event.

The Hong Kong, China delegation comprises young leaders from the IT industry, manufacturing and the banking sectors having outstanding achievements in their respective fields. Two of them have been a winner of the 1999 Young Industrialist Award of Hongkong and 2000 Outstanding Young Digi Person respectively, while a third delegate member is a winner of both awards in 2000.
