DG of Trade and Industry to attend the 3rd APEC Senior Officials Meeting in 2001

The Director-General of Trade and Industry, Mr. Joshua Law, will depart for Dalian tomorrow (August 20) to attend the third APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Senior Officials Meeting (SOM III) to be held on August 22-24 in Dalian.

SOM III will work on a number of trade and investment liberalisation, facilitation and economic cooperation issues top on APEC's agenda this year. They include discussions on the launch of a new round of WTO negotiations, peer review of individual members' liberalisation and facilitation programmes, an "e-APEC" strategy to help build an APEC digital society in the new economy, a human capacity building strategy under the new economy, electronic commerce, and APEC's outreach to the community, etc. Senior Officials will take stock of the progress of the discussions on these issues so far this year and will present the recommended way forward to Ministers and Economic Leaders in October.

The Hong Kong, China delegation to SOM III and related committees/sub-committees meetings comprise officials from a number of policy bureaux and departments. Among them is Mr. Gregory Leung, Director of Government Supplies. He is now attending the Government Procurement Experts' Group meeting on August 18 and 19 and will make a presentation of the government's widely acclaimed electronic procurement system to APEC representatives at the meeting.

In addition, a number of academics from the local educational institutions who assist in the preparation of the 2001 APEC Economic Outlook will participate in the Economic Committee Meeting on August 20 and 21. This year, Hong Kong, China is in charge of the preparation of the Economic Outlook, and we will present the research results and major findings at SOM III.

APEC comprises 21 members, namely Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; the People's Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; the Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; the Republic of Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States of America; and Vietnam.
