HK/US Customs to
conduct Joint Factory Observation Visits
Monday, August 9, 1999
The Government announced today (Monday) that Hong Kong and the United States (US) Customs officers will conduct another round of joint factory observation visits in September.
"This is the sixth round since 1996 and the trade should be familiar with its operation by now," said Mr Andrew Wong, Head of Trade Controls, Customs & Excise Department.
"The joint teams comprise both Hong Kong and US Customs officers. They will visit only those textiles factories who have given prior consent to the visits," said Mr Wong.
"Joint team members would not undertake any enforcement activities during the visits. If necessary, any enforcement activities would be undertaken by Hong Kong Customs independently and separately from the visits." said Mr Wong.
"The visits will start from 9 September and last for about 3 weeks. Detailed arrangements will be announced shortly through a Notice to Exporters.
"As part of
our enhanced co-operation with the US to combat illegal transshipment
of textiles and clothing products, the joint factory observation visits
will continue to be conducted. This would keep the US up-to-date with
the new measures we introduce from time to time. A better understanding
by the US of our efforts will help enhance the two sides' co-operation
and effectiveness in combating textiles transshipment."
