CE marking is a certification mark required for many products sold in the EU. It indicates that a product has been assessed by the manufacturer and deemed to meet EU safety, health and environmental protection requirements. It is required for products manufactured anywhere in the world that are then marketed in the EU.
REACH is a regulation of the EU adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. In principle, REACH applies to all chemical substances. To comply with the regulation, companies must identify and manage the risks linked to the substances they manufacture and market in the EU.
The Regulation lays down requirements on sustainability, safety, labelling, marking and information of batteries to be placed on the EU market or put into service within the EU, as well as minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility and collection and treatment of waste batteries.
The RoHS Directive (often referred to as the "lead-free directive") restricts the use of certain hazardous substances (10 substances up to 22 July 2019: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate) in the design and production of various types of electronic and electrical equipment. It is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.
The WEEE Directive sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods. It requires that when electrical and electronic equipment are placed on the market, it is the responsibility of the producer/distributor to make provisions for its collection and recycling.
