Following the US Trade Representative (USTR)'s Section 301 investigation findings released on 22 March 2018, the US President announced that the US would impose additional tariffs on certain Chinese imports and take other actions. In this relation, the USTR has announced lists of Mainland products subject to additional tariffs and, in response, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council of China has announced relevant responsive measures. After rounds of trade talks, the US and China signed the Phase One trade agreement on 15 January 2020.
Pursuant to the statutory four-year review findings of the tariff actions taken under the Section 301 investigation on Mainland products, the USTR announced on 13 September 2024 and 11 December 2024 to impose additional Section 301 duties or increase the rate of Section 301 duties on certain Mainland products in 14 strategic sectors, with effect from 27 September 2024, 1 January 2025 or 1 January 2026. The 14 strategic sectors are battery parts (non-lithium-ion batteries); electric vehicles; facemasks; lithium-ion electrical vehicle batteries; lithium-ion non-electrical vehicle batteries; medical gloves; natural graphite; other critical minerals; permanent magnets; semiconductors; ship to shore cranes; solar cells (whether or not assembled into modules); steel and aluminium products; and syringes and needles.
