Pursuant to Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, the US Department of Commerce released the "Section 232 investigation" reports relating to the threatening and impairment of US' national security by imports of steel and aluminium products on 16 February 2018. As a result, the US, allegedly for national security reasons, imposed tariffs of 25 per cent and 10 per cent on steel and aluminium imports into the US respectively on a global scale on 23 March 2018, including Hong Kong, and only certain economies were excluded.

Subsequently, on 10 February 2025, the US President signed two proclamations to reinstate 25% tariff on steel imports and increase tariffs on aluminium imports to 25% from all countries/economies (unless otherwise specified) into the US, with effect from 12 March 2025.
On 3 June 2025, the US President signed a proclamation to further increase the tariff rate for steel and aluminium imports to 50% from all countries/economies (unless otherwise specified) into the US, with effect from 4 June 2025.
The US President on 26 March 2025 signed a proclamation invoking Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to impose a 25% tariff on imports of automobiles and certain automobile parts into the US. All imports of specified automobiles and specified automobile parts into the US shall be subject to a 25% tariff effective from 3 April 2025 and 3 May 2025 respectively.
