European Union (EU)* : Directive on Appliances Burning Gaseous Fuels

The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union has recently adopted a Directive relating to appliances burning gaseous fuels. Details are set out in Directive 2009/142/EC (the Directive), which can be accessed through the following link:

DETAILS

  1. The Directive is applicable to appliances burning gaseous fuels, which are used for cooking, heating, hot water production, refrigeration, lighting, or washing, with a normal water temperature not exceeding 105C. Appliances specifically designed for use in industrial processes carried out on industrial premises are excluded. Fittings burning gaseous fuels, including safety devices, controlling devices or regulating devices and sub-assembles, separately marketed for trade use and designed to be incorporated into or assembled to an appliance burning gaseous fuel, are also covered by the Directive.

  1. The Directive specifies the essential requirements for appliances and fittings burning gaseous fuels, which include requirements on general conditions, materials, design and construction. It has also stipulated the procedures for certification of conformity, as well as the requirements on CE markings and inscriptions. Details of the requirements are set out in Annexes of the Directive.
