European Union (EU)* : Commission Directive Announcing the Use of Textile Fibre Melamine for Labelling Purpose

The European Commission (EC) has introduced amendments to Directive 2008/121/EC on textile names by adding the fibre melamine to the list of textile fibres for labelling purpose. Details of the amendments are set out in Directive 2009/121/EC of 14 September 2009 accessible from the EU website at:

DETAILS

  1. The Directive 2008/121/EC lays down rules governing the labelling or marking of fibre content of textile products and provides a list of textile fibres with specified nature and description for labelling purpose. The Directive is accessible from the EU website at :

  2. On the basis of the recent findings by a technical working group and for the purpose of adaptation to technical progress, the EC has adopted Directive 2009/121/EC to add the fibre melamine to the list of textile fibres contained in Annexes I and V to the Directive 2008/121/EC. The Directive 2009/121/EC shall enter into force on 5 October 2009. EU Member States are also required to bring into force the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with the Directive 2009/121/EC by 15 September 2010.
