Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 54/2009

Notice to Exporters: Series 2 (EU) No. 1/2009

European Union (EU)* : Directive on Textiles Names (Recast)

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 73/2007 cum Notice to Exporters: Series 2 (EU) No. 1/2007 of 5 February 2007, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU have recast the Directive 96/74/EC on textile names for labelling purpose. The new Directive 2008/121/EC of 14 January 2009 is accessible from the EU website at:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2009:019:0029:0048:EN:PDF

DETAILS

  1. The Directive 96/74/EC lays down rules governing the labelling or marking of fibre content of textiles products and provides a list of textile fibres with specified nature and description for labelling purpose. Since the Directive has been substantially amended several times and further amendments are to be made, it should be recast in the interests of clarity. With effect from 12 February 2009, textile products may be marketed within the EU only where such products comply with the recast Directive 2008/121/EC.
