Commercial Information Circular No. 86/2009

European Union (EU)* : Regulations on Food Additives, Enzymes and Flavourings

The European Commission (the Commission) has adopted four regulations concerning the common authorisation procedure, condition of use and rules on the labelling of food additives, enzymes and flavourings. Details are set out in the Regulations (EC) No 1331/2008, 1332/2008, 1333/2008 and 1334/2008 respectively. These Regulations can be accessed through the following links:

DETAIL

  1. Regulation (EC) No 1331/2008 lays down the common procedure for the assessment and authorisation of food additives, food enzymes, food flavourings and source materials of food flavourings and of food ingredients with flavouring properties. A Community list of substances will be published and only substances on the list are authorised to be placed on the market and used in foods, in accordance with the specifications and conditions of use. Conditions for inclusion of the substances in the Community list and the relevant rules on the labelling are set out in Regulations (EC) No 1332/2008, 1333/2008 and 1334/2008 for enzymes, additives, and flavourings respectively.

  2. Implementing measures for the common procedure and the Community list shall be adopted by the Commission within a period of no longer than 24 months from the adoption of these Regulations.
