Commercial Information Circular No. 559/2009

European Union (EU)* : Authorisation of certain Health Claims made on Food

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 257/2008 of 2 May 2008, the European Commission (the Commission) has adopted four Regulations listing the health claims authorised and rejected by the Commission. Details are set out in Commission Regulations (EC) Nos. 983/2009, 984/2009, 1024/2009 and 1025/2009. The Regulations can be accessed through the following links:

DETAILS

  1. According to Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006, health claims made on food are prohibited unless they are authorised by the Commission. Upon receipt of applications for authorisation of health claims submitted by various food business operators, the Commission has concluded the authorisation of certain health claims made on food based on the scientific data presented. Details of the permitted and rejected health claims are listed out in Annexes of the Regulations.
