Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 435/2009

European Union (EU)* : Ecodesign Requirements for Electric Motors

Further to Commercial Information Circulars No. 331/2005 of 17 August 2005, the European Commission (the Commission) has adopted a Regulation specifying the ecodesign requirements for electric motors. Details are set out in Commission Regulation (EC) No. 640/2009 (the Regulation), which can be accessed through the following link:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2009:191:0026:0034:EN:PDF

DETAILS

  1.
  2. The Regulation specifies the ecodesign requirements, conformity assessment and verification procedures on electric motors, including motors which are integrated in other products. Under the Regulation, motors are defined as an electric single speed, three-phase 50 Hz or 50/60 Hz, squirrel cage induction motor that:
- has 2 to 6 poles;
- has a rated voltage of UN up to 1,000 V;
- has rated output PN between 0.75kW and 375kW;
- is rated on the basis of continuous duty operation;

The Regulation is not applicable to motors listed under Article 1(2), such as brake motors, motors designed to operate wholly immersed in a liquid, etc. However, certain information requirements specified in Annex I may still apply to these motors.

  1. Details of the eco-design requirements are set out in Annex I of the Regulation. The ecodesign requirements shall be implemented in three stages as follows:
    1. From 16 June 2011, motors shall not be less efficient than the IE2 efficiency level, as stated in point 1 of Annex I;

    2. (From 1 January 2015, motors with a rated output of 7.5-375kW shall not be less efficient than the IE3 efficiency level, as stated in point 1 of Annex I, or meet the IE2 efficiency level, and be equipped with a variable speed drive;

    3. From 1 January 2017, all motors with a rated output of 0.75-375kW shall not be less efficient than the IE3 efficiency level, or meet the IE2 efficiency level, and be equipped with a variable speed drive.

The product information requirements are also set out in Annex I of the Regulation, whereas the compliance with the ecodesign requirements shall be measured and calculated according to the methods in Annex II.
