Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 556/2008

European Union (EU)* : Amendments to the Directive on Nutrition Labelling for Foodstuffs

Further to our Commercial Information Circular No. 39/2007 of 15 January 2007, the European Commission (the Commission) has recently adopted a Directive to amend the Council Directive 90/496/EEC concerning the nutrition labelling on foodstuffs. Details are set out in the Commission Directive 2008/100/EC (the Directive), which can be accessed through the following link:
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2008:285:0009:0012:EN:PDF

DETAILS

  1.
  2. The Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006 sets out conditions for the use of nutrition claims "source of fibre" and "high fibre" in its Annex, with reference to the definition of fibre in the Council Directive 90/496/EEC. Recent scientific evidence shows that the definition of the material constituting fibre requires to be updated. For details please refer to Annex II of the Directive.

  3. Separately, the Directive also updated the energy conversion factors for fibre and erythritol, and the list of vitamins and minerals with their recommended daily allowances.
