European Union (EU)* : Amendments to the Regulation Setting Maximum Levels for Certain Contaminants in Foodstuffs

Further to our Commercial Information Circular No. 21/2007 of 9 January 2007, the European Commission (the Commission) has recently adopted a Regulation to amend Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006 concerning the maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs. Details are set out in the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 629/2008 (the Regulation). The Regulation can be accessed through the following link:

DETAILS

  1. In order to protect public health, the EU authorities considered necessary to revise/set the maximum levels of lead, cadmium and mercury in certain aquatic species, fungi and food supplements, and to clarify that the maximum level for fruit does not apply to tree nuts. Details are set out in the Annex to the Regulation.

  2. The Regulation shall enter into force on 23 July 2008, but the requirements for food supplements shall only apply from 1 July 2009.
